State Party President J&k UT G.M.Shaheen

G.M. Shaheen is the State Party President of Janata Dal United in J&K. He was born in Kakothal Kreeri, district Baramulla and did his primary schooling from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Srinagar. He completed MSc in Electronics from the Kashmir University before landing a job at Air India in 1986. Mr. Shaheen was posted at Hyderabad before being shifted to Jodhpur and subsequently to Delhi. In 1989, he was posted at Srinagar airport. In 1991 June, he marked the beginning of his political career by joining Janata Dal United (JDU) when Mufti Mohammad Syed was the Home Minister of India. Subsequently, he became a member of the Jammu and Kashmir Peace Council, representing the Government of India. He played a pivotal role in giving suggestions to the GOI for achieving peace in the valley and coming out from insurgency. As a result, the first parliamentary election was held in J&K in 1995. Soon, Mohammad Maqbool Dar became the Union Home Minister of India, with whom G.M. Shaheen spent 3 years in Delhi. In 1996, the young turk in his heyday returned back to Srinagar. He worked really hard for the people of J&K to live in a peaceful environment. As an emerging young leader, he motivated people at different public gatherings to join mainstream politics and work for peace and progress. In 1996, JDU contested the election in J&K and Mr. Shaheen became the General Secretary. The party earned 6 assembly seats in J&K. In 2003, he was chosen as the President of the JDU in J&K. As the President of the party, the veteran political figure has been a frontrunner in safeguarding the Human Rights of people of Jammu and Kashmir. He has led the fight against all the social evils prevailing in the state, while promoting the local talent on big platforms. He shepherded the party and all its members to enhance the footprints of JDU in the state to make a difference in the long run. In 2008, during the Amarnath land row, G.M Shaheen initiated talks with different associations to bring the situation under control. He took the initiative for peace amidst the precarious situation across Jammu and Kashmir. He was invited to Delhi and appreciated by Sonia Gandhi for his efforts. Over the last couple of decades, he has discussed several educational projects with the J&K government and the Government of India at large. As a result, the foundation for several universities has been laid down, especially in Anantnag and Delina, Baramulla. The GOI has always supported the genuine steps and efforts for peace and development undertaken by JDU under the helm of G.M. Shaheen in Jammu and Kashmir. Post abrogation of article 370 and 35A, he worked hard for the release of political prisoners and youth to bring prosperity to the region and restore the normalcy by working for the welfare of the Union Territory. In 2024, the NDA came into power yet again and G.M Shaheen held talks with GOI, MOH, Nitish Kumar and other prominent entities and leaders to take immediate steps for the welfare of Jammu and Kashmir and release the prisoners. He also held talks with separatist leaders like Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Bilal Gani Lone and Islamic Scholars, including the chief of Jamiat-e-Ahle Hadees Dr Lateef Alkindi and famous speaker Maulana Mushtaq Ahmed Veeri to work for inclusive growth of the region by encouraging everyone to play their part.
