It formed another coalition government, with Nitish Kumar returning as chief minister.
The party also performed well in the 2009 elections to the Lok Sabha (lower chamber of the Indian parliament), in which 20 of its candidates won seats.
Bihar remained the JD(U)’s stronghold, although the party also had some electoral success in neighbouring Jharkhand.
